How does a roof insurance claim work?

You report the damage to your insurer, document it, prevent further damage, and the insurer assesses the loss under your policy and decides what it pays. What can a roofer do to help with an insurance claim?

A roofer can inspect the roof, photograph and describe the damage, and give you a written, itemized estimate to share with your insurer. What a roofer can't do is tell you what your policy covers or deal with the insurer for you. Those questions belong with your insurer and your policy documents.

On older houses we note conditions an adjuster may ask about, such as the roof's material and age, how many layers there are and the state of the deck, so the record is complete.

Claim questions

Will insurance pay to replace a slate roof with asphalt?
That depends entirely on your policy and the insurer's assessment, so ask your insurer directly. We can document the roof's condition and price the work in writing either way.
Should I sign anything a contractor gives me during a claim?
Read everything first, and don't sign paperwork with blank sections. The state's guide also says to get the total cost, scope and timetable in writing before work starts.
